Counting Sheep? (Stop Acting Like One!)

Counting Sheep? (Stop Acting Like One!)

For those of you who have no doubt noticed, and were possibly aghast, by the frequent number of grammatical errors and misspellings you have seen in this and other blogs, no doubt some of the author's errors were due to their many attempts to edit and transfer writings from a word document, while other mistakes were due to sheer oversight or pehaps made trying to multi-task their way through life. Do their authors feel bad? Not really. Why is that?

As I tell all my students here in Thailand who are studying English, if you don't make mistakes you can't learn how to improve. You see it's the effort and enthusiasm that you put out there which matters most whether you are Studying or Teaching. It's all about making connections not seeking perfection. So many people are afraid to pursue a new relationship or purse teaching as a first or second career, largely due to the fact that they think they need to know everything in advance, and in the case of becoming a TEFL teacher, all the rules of a grammar of a language which they speak naturally already.

Yes  having an advanced degree helps, and yes I knowing how to find information is a valuable skill, but really that is something anyone could do, if they decided they really wanted to make the effort. We all make mistakes all the time. But in the process we learn how to improve (some of us anyway...hahaha!) Personally speaking, I  don't remember every rule of English Language in the forefront of my mind. That's what grammar text books are for. I encourage my students to use them as needed, just as I do the same thing. Grammar is about one percent of the total load you can expect to encounter. Local instructors are usually employed for this, because of the need to translate the rules. The value you bring is your Native Speaking skills which help students with much needed conversational skills.

Again it's the lack of effort that keeps us from moving forward, in all aspects of life to be sure, but especially in pursuing new paths of employment! Counting Sheep? Stop worrying, because grammar isn't the problem! At paradise TEFL we focus on utilizing a "Practical Approach" in terms of teaching our students how to teach successfully and use fun activities to motivate and educate their students. We offer courses both on site here in Chiang Mai, and on line as well as virtual classes through Google Plus (in a fashion similar to Skype)
