Wonderful scenery, friendly people, and a more relaxed “in the moment” lifestyle.

Don’t have the time to take a month long course? “Mai pen rai” (no worries) because we also offer a two week TEFL/TESOL intensive that allows you to complete your coursework in just as little as fifteen days (weekends required) so that you can finish quickly and begin teaching in a timeframe that works for you. Or have the chance to relax and explore before your next employment contract begins.

Funny_moment

With our practical approach, we aim to provide the highest levels of hands on teaching time of any program out there. Much higher than CELTA and comparable programs which focus the majority of their class time on theory and research.  At Paradise TEFL, we strive to provide graduates with the actual experience of engaging with English as an Additional Language (EAL) in conversational as well as reading and writing lesson planning and delivery. We can charge less because we are smaller and less administratively top heavy program, with skilled instruction.

Paradise TEFL CM employs only licensed North American instructors with an MA or higher and twenty years of teaching experience to help mentor our participants and prepare you for the real tasks that lie ahead, which is not a bunch of theoretical and impractical techniques but rather how to structure learning activities which makes learning English as a Second (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) fun, interesting, and relevant for both non-native speakers and their instructors alike.

Thailand Takes Center Stage in ASEAN Economic Platform

Thailand Takes Center Stage in ASEAN Economic Platform

(Partnership with Japan, Stronger Currency & Burmese Refugee Aid Cited)
Flag-of-asean-countries
Thailand seems to be at the center of a rising and pro-democracy and economic regional movement in SE Asia According to AP News in Bangkok The convergence of economic forces continue to focus on Thailand with Japan announcing today that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday agreed to strengthen economic and security ties with Thailand during a visit to Southeast Asia aimed at reinforcing alliances amid tensions over China’s growing assertiveness.

He said the two countries will also reinforce relations between Japan and the 10-nation bloc Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN.  South East Asia is gaining in importance as Japanese investors seek to balance risks from their investments in China, where anti-Japanese riots sparked by tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea have hammered exports and prompted boycotts of some Japanese products.

Thailand is Abe’s second stop in the three-country Southeast Asian tour, which began in Vietnam and ends in Indonesia on Saturday. Japan is Thailand’s biggest trading partner and the three nations are key manufacturing bases and growing markets for Japanese companies. Abe, making his first overseas trip since taking office last month, said on Thursday he and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra agreed to work together to solve bilateral and regional problems, including in East Asia, where “there is a great change in the strategic environment.”

In comments to reporters at a joint press conference, the two leaders did not directly mention the South China Sea, where several Southeast Asian countries have territorial disputes with China. Thailand’s first woman prime minster Yingluck said they agreed to cooperate in promoting peace and stability to facilitate economic growth in Asia.“We both agreed that any conflicts in the region should be solved through peaceful means, based on every side’s benefits, including the issue of security over the territorial waters,” Yingluck said.

In terms of a stronger currency, according to Bangkok daily newspaper "The Nation," Thailand's baht was poised for its biggest weekly advance since December 2011, and government bonds rose, as global funds increased holdings of assets that offer higher yields. The baht retreated after Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said on Thursday that exporters will face difficulties if it strengthens further. The 10-year bond yields 3.7%, compared with 1.87% in the United States and 0.75% in Japan.

"Funds are flowing into the whole of Asia, especially Southeast Asia, and Thailand is one of the most attractive places," said Tohru Nishihama, an economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute Inc. in Tokyo. "The baht climbed 1.7% from a week ago to 29.78 per dollar as of 8.30am in Bangkok, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, on the humanitarian side of political events, Relief operations by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help Rohingya migrants are set to begin in earnest now that Thai authorities have given the go-ahead, agency spokesperson Vivian Tan said yesterday.

The announcement came as officials detained another 60 Rohingyas yesterday. The migrants were found on a boat off Ranong's Muang district that was attempting to dock. The new arrivals bring to 917 the number of Rohingyas who have entered Thailand illegally from Myanmar in recent weeks.

While the government works out operational measures, the UNHCR will start by interviewing the 857 Myanmar-based exiles and take other measures to verify details provided by them. In the meantime, the UNHCR will decide what steps to take and in which areas help is most needed, before finally providing full-scale assistance, Tan said.

The statement called on Thai authorities not to repatriate the Rohingya to Myanmar, while welcoming donations to an account named Assistance Fund for Rohingyas, account number 934-1-48557-6, at the Islamic Bank of Thailand's Hat Yai branch.

All this would appear to bode well for those interested in teaching English Language as a profession. Whatever methods or plans of action educator decides to take, in general, the more advanced certifications a TEFL or TESOL Teacher holds, the more opportunity they possess in terms of their marketability and increased number of employment options.

What does it mean to be Rich in TEFL/TESOL Teaching?

WHAT DOES IN MEAN TO BE “RICH” AS A TEFL/TESOL TEACHER?
028

(Income vs. quality of life-The two don’t always correspond diametrically)

If you ask the average person what it means to be “rich” they will almost always says it means having a lot of money. If you phrase the question as what does it mean to be “wealthy,” usually the answer is relatively the same but often times other material goods besides money are introduced into the picture.

074

The answer changes when you ask the question about “quality of life,” the ideals of health, self-determination/freedom, income vs. expenses, ability to travel and own your own home as well as personal job satisfaction or happiness tend to emerge.  The answers are different for everyone.

Karen_hill_tribe4

Obtaining a TEFL/TESOL teaching certificate can mean not only an opportunity for teaching abroad but a higher quality of life and the freedom to travel and work in countless countries all across the planet.  Depending on your individual preferences for rural or urban living, the amount of living space you desire and how much you like to eat out vs. cooking food at home and if you chose to invest in a motorbike or take taxis in order to meet your basic transportation needs.
Download
One thing you will learn as an English Teacher living abroad is how little material goods you may actually need to live a comfortable life.  Schools and industries often supply their teaching instructors with accommodations and basic furnishings.  Most people, for example, do not own cars or use them as a part of daily life in South East Asia, Central and South America and Africa as this is considered a non-essential luxury. However in colder climates having a car would be essential. This of course would depend on the climate, availability of mass transit and proximity to work.

Having a TEFL/TESOL English language teaching background means you always have flexibility in terms of where you can go for your next teaching gig and how long you would like to stay. Most contracts are about one year, but in many cases, depending upon the teaching environment (school vs. businesses) the contract time can vary from six months to two years on average.

Long_neck_profile

One basic rule for quality of life is Health (– stress ) + income,  opportunity and freedom x (multiplied by) personal satisfaction/self-determination and quality of relationships = happiness or quality of life (AKA Wealth).
177

This can be divided by factors of “access to nature” or “access to quality products like food/shopping and medicine” but now we are getting into a grayer area.  So let’s look at some numbers instead.

A TEFL/TESOL graduate living in Northern Thailand for example:

Current approximate expenses in USD: (vary slightly month to month)

·         Rent: About $200 usd a month for a one bedroom apartment with private bath and AC.

·         Food: About $200 a month (to eat like a King!-Yes even Pizza and a few drinks now and then).

·         Utilities: Around $20-30 electric, $25 internet (hi speed unlimited) $25 Phone. Water, negligible.

·         Transportation: Can fill up the motorbike for less than $5 to $6 good for one week.

·         Accident Health Coverage: Up to $20,000 usd about $5 a month. (Uninsured office Doctors office visit, $10, meds and other treatments not included; X-rays run about $15 per each meds $5-10.)

·         Clothing/Miscellaneous: $75 or so; depending on level of comfort you think you need.

·         Weather: (October through February) Priceless!

·         Total Expenses= About $500-600 Per month. (Income on average about 30-35,000 thb or $1000-1200 usd with a full time teaching position & after school tutoring for 90 minutes twice a week)

*If you want to travel to the beach for a holiday it will cost you about $120 usd for airfare and accommodations vary greatly, but anywhere from $25-45 usd per night will get you a average to well above average room with all the amenities.

Go East Young Woman

GO EAST YOUNG WOMAN!

(TEFL EMPLOYMENT TRENDS FOR WOMEN IN EDUCATION)

Lady_teacher_in_charge

It seems more and more spirited women are taking advantage of the economic opportunities available in English language Instruction overseas these days. Perhaps there is no place more evident than Asia given the rising middle class over the past several decades, to the point where there is a tremendous opportunity for professionally trained and EFL certified females in the elementary teaching profession in countries ranging as far and wide as Japan, Korea and China, to Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand and certainly across most of the Middle East.

Why Women, Why Now?

In the field of TEFL which is still, perhaps unfairly, male dominated, particularly in terms of administrative positions and leadership roles, it appears the allure of women as professional English instructors is becoming increasingly desirable, as employer perceptions for women working with younger learners becomes more and more the norm. Unlike women, men it seems, are more likely to “pack it in” and move abroad as “ex-Pats” in general, probably because of greater acceptance to do so as entrepreneurial  breadwinners, while  women may remain more reluctant because of family ties and child rearing duties than their male counterparts.

019

As birthrates in Asia rise and as women’s liberation and equal footing in the world wide workplace strengthens, more women seem to be less inhibited about increasing their income potential and quality of life, and therefore they too desire to travel abroad more than in the past.  It would seem in a world which is becoming increasingly smaller and more connected, that women traveling for work is gaining greater acceptance and opportunities for working abroad are undoubtedly on the rise.

Dsc01195

The increase in women in the EFL field, and as international tourists in general, may in part be due to increased disposable income for women due to economic equalization and because of the widely held conception that women are more nurturing (a trait which is recently gaining acceptance in a more old-fashioned “top down” educational learning culture) as important criteria for effective learning. In addition to their obvious child nurturing experience and capabilities, women are sometimes viewed as more reliable and preferable to their male counterparts when it comes to teaching elementary learners, or so it would seem, based upon the way in which positions are commonly advertised, specifying a preference for “young energetic English speaking female teachers.”

022

Perhaps this is due to the perception that women are seen as more "relate-able" when it comes to working collaboratively or that they appear to “take directions better” without questioning authority unlike men, who appear to be more likely to question policies and procedures. It remains debatable, but the common view appears to be that women are less likely to show up after a weekend bender of carousing and drinking oneself into a stupor, hung over and ill prepared for work when compared to men.

Irish_yoga

Increasingly, schools and businesses are showing signs that they want to employ female English Language Teachers, perhaps because they are finding, that working women are less risky in terms of higher turnover than male teachers and are more likely to exercise a greater sense of personal responsibility than their male counterparts. (Sorry guys,  this is just the common stereotype working against us.)

047

Beauty Beware

But be forewarned ladies, in a culture where appearances are often an important prerequisite to success (for men and women alike) youth and “attractiveness” invariably can play a role in the practices of hiring and promotion. Therefore, it is not considered inappropriate or unusual to see advertisements in some Asian countries that include desired age, height and weight characteristics listed among the education and experience qualifications for women in certain positions, although this tends to be more of a factor in hospitality, secretarial and other “image conscious” industries, which may or may not carry over into the field of education. Much of this depends on the all too legal discriminatory practices of the supervisors and their managers across diverse regions.  The same holds true for men in the military and law enforcement.

Dsc01733

Teaching Couples

Lisa_confident

Night_school_crew

For this reason, often times teaching couples are seen as highly desirable, because a male teacher in a stable relationship, perhaps with a child or two can be seen as committed and “family oriented” which is a selling point to parents and their school community as they are viewed as more committed to the cause of child rearing and routine employment. Often too many dependents may be problematic if the school offers free or discounted tuition and housing, so smaller families are generally preferable. If a couple is unmarried or non-heterosexual, these too can sometimes have negative unspoken consequences, however each situation is different and depends on a multitude  of variables including the “openness of the culture” and the manner in which these relationships are stated and maintained and how they promoted to potential employers all play a factor in acceptance.

Professional women increasingly finding that that Asia has plenty of goods and services to assist them in their daily living needs at a reasonable cost, be it health and beauty aids/ treatments, the purchasing of fashion and accessories, or the soliciting of personal assistants and professional services, as well as traditional nanny, laundry and housekeeping duties.

On average, it would appear that, men still earn more than their female colleagues in Asia, but that gap seems to be narrowing in the field of TEFL particularly for so called “Native English Speakers” (NES) over those of say secondary speakers of English employed as English as a Foreign Language instructors who are often brought in from countries like India or the Philippines when budget constrictions prohibit the hiring of a native speaker to fill various openings.
