Back fresh from a brief and rewarding hiatus to the USA, and Portland Oregon in particular, TEFL Certification programs are rolling along again in Thailand, Cambodia and Southern China.

Perhaps there is no better place to begin one’s teaching career in the field of English as a Foreign Language than South East Asia, and Thailand in particular as the tourist friendly “Land of Smiles” is the perfect staging ground for western tourists and ex-patriots traveling abroad throughout the region.
With summer winding down in the Northern Hemisphere and the start of the school year already getting underway in much of the West as classroom teachers begin to attend required in-service, planning and prep duties, those who remain unemployed (or under-employed) who are interested in a career in education, may realistically be facing another nine months before new positions will open up for teaching in their own native countries.
Meanwhile, in Thailand, with the start of the school year in May long passed schools are looking ahead to the next major round of hiring in October for a return to school in November after a three week break.
Teaching in Thailand is relatively easy because of the demand for “native” English Speakers as mandated by the Ministry of Education in preparation for the economic unification of the league of South East Asian nations (ASEAN) in the next 24 to 36 months. Although the salaries are not as high paying as in some other parts of Asia, the lower cost of living and “mai pen rai” (no worries attitude) make it the perfect place to work, play and relax without many of the same economic and social pressures as many places where English Teaching positions are in high demand. Moreover, Thailand and Chiang Mai in particular, is one of the best places to make a home base before launching off into another less developed location, where finding basic western goods and services much more unlikely and challenging.
As monsoon season winds down in September and October, “autumn” in SE Asia is the perfect time to enjoy the less crowded sight-seeing opportunities compared to the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
