With the anticipated united economic zone of South East Asia pending, the need for English has never been greater. As the goal of regional self-sufficiency moving forward and slated for a timeline of three years from now for implementation, the need for English Language fluency is rapidly ramping up, among many nations, as the demand for business and service workers continues to rise.

With the governments of the participating ASEAN nations anticipating the thousands of new jobs in headed their way as fallout from rising labor rates among the global economy, the center of manufacturing and agriculture increasingly shifting to SE Asia more and more local citizens are beginning to understand the importance to speaking English in terms of the prospects for upward mobility and increasing market share.

The stakes have never been higher as the competition for cheaper markets continues to grow and spikes from a demand for affordable products and services by North America and European retailers and consumers continues, as they have become increasingly dependent upon Asian  goods and workers to produce and maintain affordable cost effectiveness and price stability back home.

Much of the new government policies are trying to stimulate both national and regional markets not only among  the individual ASEAN members themselves, but  among the major economic players next door in China
and India, who  despite a continuing slowdown, continue to see their economies expanding at decent rates fluctuating from three (3) to nine  (9) percent in 2012.
Currently in Thailand, the Ministry of Education has recently stepped up efforts to make sure its teaching staff and students are meeting specified  goals and teaching objectives by  deploying a large number of government staff to observe and test the teachers and their students on their English language skills and abilities over the next several years.

According to 2009 Paradise TEFL Chiang Mai graduate/ public school teacher Ms. Nisangkard (who teaches Elementary English for a school in Saraburi Province) “The Ministry  had begun to send inspectors to sit  in [on our] lessons and take notes and evaluate the staff  in order to give feedback to the administration.  Our Program Director is very nervous about the outcome and scores the government officials determine, because it may affect the funding each school get[s]throughout the whole Kingdom”.

And it is not only in Thailand. But places like Myanmar/Burma, where the push for democratization and corporate expansion has begun to take center stage and the number of foreign nationals with children and spouses continues to increase. The pressure is on, new schools are opening up in Yangoon every month and the race to meet the L2 demands of both the young and the old workers alike to become fluent English speakers in order to be more competitive is well under way and widely regarded as a basic necessity.
